Refrigerators are essential appliances required for preserving and keeping food cool. As a result, when they become faulty, it can lead to food spoilage and affect our dietary routines.
1. Check the thermostat settings -Make sure they haven’t accidentally been changed.
2. Clean the condenser coils - Dirty coils can hinder the fridge’s cooling system.
3. Inspect the door seals - Damaged seals can let warm air in.
4. Rearrange food - Overpacking can block vents, so reorganize the fridge for better air circulation.
1. Check For A Clogged Defrost Drain –Debris can block this drain, causing water to back up and leak.
2. Unclog The Drain – Clean the drain to clear any blockages.
3. Inspect The Water Supply Line – A damaged or frozen water line for a dispenser or ice maker can also cause leaks.
1. Check the evaporator fan – A worn or faulty evaporator fan can make chirping or squeaking sounds.
2. Listen to the compressor – If the compressor isn’t turning on or is making weird sounds, it could indicate a problem.
2. Check for a faulty thermostat – A malfunctioning thermostat can cause the fridge to run constantly.

To clean the interior, remove all food, shelves, and drawers and wipe down the inside and all parts with warm, soapy water. For more stubborn odours, use a solution of 1 tablespoon of liquid bleach in 1 gallon of water to sanitize after cleaning with soap. Clean the door gaskets with hot soapy water to make sure they create a tight seal.

Finally, keep the area around the fridge clear and wipe down the outside of the appliance regularly to prevent dust build-up.

To maintain airflow, check inside the fridge for air vents and ensure they aren’t blocked by food items. Ensure there’s at least 5cm/2 inches of free space around the fridge for heat release and proper air circulation. Finally, don’t overfill the fridge. Aim for it to be about three quarters full to let cold air circulate evenly.

The coils are typically found at the back or bottom of the fridge. Before cleaning them, always unplug the fridge. Use a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment or a long-handled condenser brush to remove dust and debris from the coils. This should be done twice annually.

Regularly check that the fridge’s temperature is set correctly. Ideally, the temperature should be around 3-4°C for the fridge and -18°C for the freezer. Furthermore, limit how often and how long you open the fridge doors for to minimize air exchange and conserve energy.
